渔人至此,村民见状大惊，询问其来历，渔人如实相告，村民便邀请渔人回家，设宴款待，村中之人闻讯纷纷前来探问，皆言祖先为避秦乱，率众迁至此地，与外界隔绝，不知今世何年，渔人将外界之事一一告知，众人皆叹息不已，此后，村民纷纷邀请渔人至家中，款待数日，渔人告辞离去，临别之际，村民叮嘱：“此等美景，不足为外人道也。”
渔人离去后,寻回船只，循着原路返回，沿途做了标记，抵达郡城后，渔人前往太守府，将此事告知，太守派人随渔人前往探查，却迷失了道路，南阳人刘子骥，一位高尚之士，闻听此事，欣然前往，却未果，不久病逝，此后，无人再探寻桃花源。

In the Taiyuan period of the Jin Dynasty, a fisherman from Wuling was going about his business when he came upon a peach orchard along the riverbank. The orchard stretched for several hundred steps, with no other trees in sight, the grass was lush and green, and the fallen petals were scattered about. The fisherman was amazed by this sight and continued to explore. When the orchard ended at the source of the river, he discovered a small mountain with a narrow opening that seemed to emit light. The fisherman left his boat and climbed the mountain, initially finding the opening very narrow, just wide enough for a person to pass through. After walking for dozens of steps, the cave opened up suddenly. The land was flat and spacious, the houses were neat, and there were good fields, beautiful ponds, mulberry trees, and bamboo. The paths were crisscrossed, and chickens and dogs could be heard. Among the villagers, people came and went to plant and work, and the clothing of men and women was all like that of outsiders. The old and the young were all happy and contented.
When the villagers saw the fisherman, they were greatly surprised and asked where he came from. He answered fully. They then invited him back to their homes, prepared wine and killed chickens for food. When the people in the village heard about this person, they all came to inquire. They said that their ancestors had fled the chaos of the Qin Dynasty, led their wives and children and villagers to this secluded place, and had not gone out since then, thus separating from the outside world. They asked what era it was now, and they did not even know about the Han Dynasty, let alone the Wei and Jin Dynasties. The fisherman told them about what he had heard, and they all sighed with regret. The others also invited him to their homes, and they all offered wine and food. After staying for several days, he said goodbye and left. The people there said, "This is not something that can be told to outsiders."
After leaving, he found his boat and supported himself along the path he had taken, marking it everywhere. When he reached the county, he went to the magistrate and told him about it. The magistrate sent people to follow him and find the path he had marked, but they got lost and could not find the way again. Liu Zijiu of Nanyang, a noble and upright man, heard about it and happily planned to go there. However, he did not succeed and later died of illness. After that, no one asked about it anymore.
