In the fourth year of Taihe, a fisherman from Wuling found this place on the river. Initially, the fisherman intended to explore the forest, and suddenly he encountered a peach orchard, which was hundreds of steps on both sides of the river, with no other trees, fresh grass, and falling petals. The fisherman was very surprised and continued to go forward to explore the forest.
The forest ended at the source of the river, and he found a mountain with a small opening, as if there was light. The fisherman left his boat and went in through the opening. At first, it was very narrow, just enough for a person to pass through. After walking for dozens of steps, it suddenly opened up. The land was flat, the houses were neat, and there were good fields, beautiful ponds, mulberry trees, and bamboo. The roads were busy, and chickens and dogs could be heard. The people there came and went, planting and working, and the clothes worn by men and women were all like those outside. The old and the young were all happy and content.
When they saw the fisherman, they were very surprised and asked where he came from. He answered their questions. They invited him back to their homes, prepared wine and killed chickens to make food. The people in the village heard that there was such a person and came to ask about him. They said that their ancestors had fled the chaos of the Qin Dynasty, led their wives and children and villagers to this isolated place, and had not gone out since then, so they had been separated from the outside world. They asked what era it was now, and they did not know about the Han, let alone the Wei and Jin dynasties. The fisherman told them about what he had heard, and they all sighed with regret. The others also invited him to their homes, and they all brought wine and food. After staying for several days, he said goodbye and left. The people there said, "It is not enough to be told to outsiders."
After leaving, he found his boat and followed the road, marking it everywhere. When he arrived in the county, he went to the magistrate and told him about it. The magistrate sent people to follow him to find the place he had marked, but they got lost and could not find the road again. Liu Zijiu, a nobleman from Nanyang, heard about it and was happy to plan to go there. However, he did not succeed and died of illness. After that, no one asked for directions anymore.
